0 Using Kinect to Navigate a 3D CAVE at CASALA

Hi,

I work for CASALA which is an advanced research center based at the Dundalk Institute of Technology in Ireland and we use a 4 walled 3D CAVE (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment) as part of our research into Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) technologies. One of the projects I am currently looking at is different controller technologies for 3D immersive environments. Using Kinect and the FAAST toolkit we are successfully using the kinect to navigate and interact with CASALA’s 3D worlds with great success and to the great excitement of all involved.

You can see some of what we’re up to at the following URL http://www.casala.ie/3d-cave.html and in particular a short demo of Kinect in the CAVE on Video 3.

Would love to show something fun with the Kinect and CAVE on KinectHacks.net.

Regards,
Carl.

thanks Carl Flynn

We can finally let people test the architecture before anything is built to make sure it is easy to navigate. Usability testing to the nth!

Now you need an Omnidirectional treadmill so you can just walk and use your arms/hands for other things.

(which has been done in the env’t it seems minus the kinect which is a fantastic addition)
