PrimeSense, which created the 3D sensing camera used in Kinect has launched OpenNI standard an industry-led, not-for-profit organization formed to certify and promote the compatibility and interoperability of Natural Interaction (NI) devices, applications and middleware. As a first step towards this goal, the organization has made available an open source framework – the OpenNI framework – which provides an application programming interface (API) for writing applications utilizing natural interaction. This API covers communication with both low level devices (e.g. vision and audio sensors), as well as high-level middleware solutions.

What it means for us is that developers will more easily and standards for Kinect app development are  being established..

Here is a video which demonstrates real-time skeleton tracking, was produced using the OpenNI compliant NITE middleware by PrimeSense, running on their PrimeSensor depth sensing hardware, all connected using the OpenNI framework.

    But this is not Kinect right ??

    • Blue

      Nope. Read the video description on the youtube page.

    Even if the camera in the video technically isnt a Kinect. Since it uses the same 3d sensing hardware, the same drivers should work with it…. then it comes down to software — and it looks like this new SDK could open up new doors, making is so much easier to do things for the Kinect.

    I dont know how far this one is yet: But imagine nature code such as … Player1.Detect(),
    Point1 = Player1.LeftHand
    Point2 = Player1.RightHand

    things like that…. where previously we had to detect blobs based upon depth thresholds.

      It works with Kinect.
      I have it running on my PC now.

    microsoft is going to release XNA sdk for kinect which im pretty sure will include their voice recognition libraries and full body and gesture recognition libraries, combined with opening up the audio inputs and moving the motor and things like that.

    in fact i think they’re going toe expand expression studios and C sharp visual studios just to have a developing environment for kinect, which would come build in with the xna framework.

      Actually I expect the community will come up with a visual studio add on before MS gets around to it. Well I mean gets around to releasing it since they obviously have one already. Im looking into it myself. Using the open source hacks to create something drag and drop in VS. I have to work for a living tho so someone will probably beat me to it.

    THIS is what I have been waiting for!

  • macouno

    So hang on… you can apparently do mocap if you get the NITE middleware by primesense? Or have they just coded this themselves? Man this is exciting stuff, exactly the application I’ve been waiting for!

    I know Microsoft wants to protect their development investment, but this is the tech that has been promised for years, starting as far back as early SciFi, before the first Univac. Natural user interfaces are only going to snowball in development now. Lest just hope that MS is working on the PC version of this in their next OS release.

    I predicted this the day Kinect came out. I was like….cool…cheap mocap! Just waiting for the software now :P

      That is where we, Organic Motion come in…Check what we just launched..

    Yes, yes, developers will more easily.
